The Storyboards and Scripts of the “Mansion” level for Fear Effect Inferno PlayStation 2
This article, accessible via [Fear Effect Inferno Playstation 2 and its prototypes: the art of video game storytelling], aims to reveal the hidden treasures of Fear Effect Inferno, guiding you through the complexity of its narrative, the richness of its characters and the nuances of its prototype. We now venture into the labyrinthine “Mansion” level, a space where interactive storytelling intertwines with the excitement of adventure and exhilarating narrative twists.
Each cutscene has its own unique Kronos Entertainment code. The first letter coincides with the level of Fear Effect Inferno, in this case “A” for “Mansion”. The numbers represent the cinematics. Finally, the last letter “N” stands for “Narrative”. The Scripts and extracts making up the Storyboards are numbered in the same way, to link them to the corresponding cutscenes.
On this page, you can view the Scripts and all the Storyboards of the “Mansion” level in the order in which they appear in the game.

Deke
Can’t get enougha me, huh?
Guard
I’m checkin’ that camera now
The guard tries to ignore him, and starts to climb onto the counter to check the camera.
Deke watches this guy. He doesn’t want to have to kill this guy right now, but he sure as hell can’t let that camera get turned back on.
Deke (cont.)
(coldly)
I know I getcha all wet an’ wobbly, but I ain’t sure I’m crazy ‘bout the idea a you peepin’ me an’ tossin’ it all day long.
The guard starts to remove the cover from the camera.
Guard

Fuck off, slob.
The cover falls to the counter.
Deke
Yeah. Fing fong bing bong to you too.
The guard reaches to catch it just as a knife goes flying by him and sticks in the wall.
The guard looks back to see Deke readying two more knives; one in each hand.
In a flash, Deke hurls the knives at the guard, who barely manages to dive off the counter in time to avoid them.

Deke
Now I didn’t ask ya fer a date. I asked fer the damn code.
Guard
(In severe pain)

Just as Deke is raising the knife to finish him off, a shot rings out, blowing the knife out of Deke’s hand.
He spins to face his assailant – three more guards have appeared on a dining platform above, and witnessed the preceding events in horror.
THE GUARDS ON THE PLATFORM, leaping down to the tops of the cabinets and down to the floor to enter the fight.

ext. Balcony, harem Room - night
Rain stands on a balcony over looking the ocean
Hana (o.c.)
You’re on, Rain.
Rain
(to communicator)
Can’t believe you’ve got me in this ridiculous getup.
Hana (o.c.)
Oh, stop complaining – you can take it off when you get home. …I’ll help.
Rain
On my way. Five minutes and I’ll be in the security room.
Rain rolls her eyes, then she slides open the sliding glass door and slips through.
cut to:
int. harem room - night
The room beyond is filled with impossibly beautiful women, wearing the same barely present harem outfit Rain has on.
Two of the women are engaged in what seems to be the early stages of a hot and heavy makeout session. One of them spots her, and in a second, they’re both looking.
Rain has no choice but to acknowledge them.
Rain
Oh, sorry! I didn’t mean to interrupt.
Girl #1
Do you see us complaining?
3)
Girl #2
We’re just warming up for the boss.
Rain
He’s already here?
Girl #2
Not yet. We still have plenty of time for some fun...
Each of them places a hand on Rain’s shoulder, inviting her in.
Rain
Tempting, but I’m on my way to see a friend.
Rain disengages carefully.
Girl #1
Ooh - got one on the side, huh? Better hope the boss doesn’t find out.
She turns back to Girl #2 and kisses her sensually. Pointedly.
Rain slips out of sight of the pair and surreptitiously tries the door. Locked.
Rain
Dammit.
She turns to face the room again.

1)
int. kennel - night
Rain rounds the corner and stops short – the Militia Captain is there. He strides toward her with an air of disgust.
Captain
Hey, what’ve I told you girls about being in the kennels? These dogs are dangerous!
Rain manages her best attempt at a seductive come-on, with little success.
Rain
(in what she hopes is her best seductive voice)
Why don’t you show me what you do to naughty dogs that don’t behave...
The captain tosses a ‘what the fuck is this’ look her way, then stalks toward her.
Captain
God dammit, are you gonna get the hell outta here on your own two feet or am I gonna hafta throw you out on your ass?
This isn’t going at all as she’d hoped.
As the Captain reaches her, fully intending to eject her bodily from the room, she decides to cut her losses and stuns him with a quick kick to the face.
He sprawls backward with a thud, then after a moment, starts to struggle once again to his feet.
1)
int. kennel – night
Rain reaches for the kennel door and quickly taps her communicator.
Rain
(into communicator)
Got the key.
Hana (o.c.)
Yeah. I heard. …naughty dog?
Rain shrugs.

It was all I could think of.
She opens the door and exits.
Behind her, one of the dogs in the kennel’s shadows suddenly morphs into human form and stands upright before fading away.

int. security room - night
The room inside is heavily soundproofed and festooned with monitors.
All the guards, however, are huddled around one of them, watching the harem girls in the hot tub.
The guard turns around
Guard #2
Hey! How’d you get in here?
Rain
Didn’t you get our invitation?
(re: blank stares)
Do I have to spell it out for you?
(seductively)
Or are you always satisfied just watching?
The guards look at each other for A BEAT of realization. They rush for the door.
Guard #1
Wait! Minkz will have our nuts in a jar if we all leave. Someone’s gotta stay here!
The guards look to each other. None volunteer. Finally they all look at Guard #3.
2)
Guard #2
You know the drill. Low man on the totem.
The other guards exit.
Guard #3
(plopping back down in chair)
Dammit.
(notices Rain)
Hey, sweetheart. You could stay behind and keep the totem company...
Rain
Nothing would make me happier.
Rain begins to draw her crossbow behind her back as she approaches.
The guard, however, sees this reflected in the monitor and reacts.
He dives out of the chair, drawing and quickly unloads a couple rounds at Rain as she rolls out of the way behind the machine.
The Chinese monitor wall is sprayed with bullets in the process.
Rain takes a shot at the guard with a crossbow bolt but misses.
He dives behind the machine and takes up a firing position.
1)
int. security room – night
Rain taps her communicator.
Rain
Hana….I need a crash course in Chinese numbers.
Rain
I think I remember some of it…
(thinks)
One, two and three are just lines. Seven looks like...a lower case “t,” but the four...
Hana (O.S.)
…Looks like a box. The five looks like an inverted number four between two lines. Six…
Rain
Has two legs! That’s right. The eight looks like a volcano and the nine...is a bitch.
Hana (O.S.)
Yeah. It also looks like an inverted four with a curved leg.
Rain smiles.
Rain
Curves and legs? That’s easy to remember.
(beat)
I’ll just think of you.

Oh, and Rain, perhaps you would care to join me, and your friend, Hana, for a private party.

Glas (OS)
He’ll take C.

Glas
Where’re Hana and Rain?
Deke glances at the dead guards, then back at Glas.
Deke
He’ll be bringin’ ‘em to the playroom. This way.
Deke pushes the elevator open manually and sees that the elevator is not there.
