Storyboards and Scripts of the “City Of The Dead” level for Fear Effect Inferno PlayStation 2
This dossier [Fear Effect Inferno Playstation 2 and its prototypes: the art of video game storytelling], dedicated to unveiling the buried secrets of Fear Effect Inferno, has already guided you through the twists and turns of its tumultuous history, its complex characters, and the technical peculiarities of its prototype. Now let's explore the dark avenues of the “City Of The Dead” level, where Hell appears at the end of the road.
Each cutscene has its own unique Kronos Entertainment code. The first letter coincides with the level of Fear Effect Inferno, in this case “E” for “City Of The Dead”. The numbers refer to the cinematics. Finally, the last letter “N” stands for “Narrative”. The Scripts and extracts making up the Storyboards are numbered in the same way, to link them to the corresponding cutscenes.

1)
ext. upper feng shui
Glas, Rain and Deke stand around the mirror in its transformed state, pondering it, trying to figure out what to do.
A vortex swirls within.
Deke stands sullenly apart from the group, and especially from the mirror. He wants nothing to do with it or hell.
Glas
Okay. What now?
Deke
Meself, I say we get the hell outta here.
Rain turns to face Deke sharply.
Rain
I’m not leaving without Hana!
Deke can’t hold her gaze, and winds up looking at the floor.
Deke
(quietly)
I ain’t goin’ inna that place again.
Glas
(gesturing around the space)
Look around you Deke! Where else are you gonna go? Walkabout? In a big circle?
Deke turns to face Glas directly, his humiliation at his fear turning to rage.
Deke
You got no idea what you’re walkin’ into mate.
Glas steps up into his face.
3)
Black reaper
The paths of the dead…
White reaper
…are not to be traversed by the living.
Black reaper
For death -
Glas glances at Rain, then steps up.
Glas
(interrupting)
One too many days in the fortune cookie factory, huh?
(to the reapers)
Hey, Ebony. Ivory. In plain English…
He starts gesturing as if signing to the deaf.
Glas
WHAT… DO… WE… HAVE… TO… DO… TO… GO… THROUGH?
The Black and White reapers now turn to face him.
black and white reaper
Die…
Glas glances back at Rain. This wasn’t really part of their plan.
Deke’s hands move toward his pistols. A reflex.
Their bodies begin to go transparent as they begin to fade away.
Rain approaches them.
Rain
Wait!
They’re gone, like smoke in a sudden breeze.
Deke’s hands uncurl from his pistol handles.
Glas steps back to Rain.
5)
Deke
Aright, goodonya then.
Rain throws a cool glance Deke’s way.
Rain
(to Wee Ming)
I’m not leaving Hana in hell.
Wee Ming
This extends far beyond you or me. My father has taken Hana for reasons I am only beginning to understand.
Rain
(firmly)
I don’t care. I’ll do whatever I have to do to get Hana back.
Deke
You better care girly. King of Hell ain’t a bloke ya wanna be messin’ with.
Rain wheels on Deke sharply.
Rain
FINE! You can stay then.
Rain turns to Glas.
Glas contemplates his shoes for a beat, then looks up at her.
Glas
Look Rain, I hate to agree with tubby here,
(gesturing towards Deke)
but I think he’s got a point.
Rain stops. She hadn’t expected him to back out too.
Rain looks around at the crowd arrayed around her, a clutch of worried, sullen faces, then at Wee Ming.
7)
Wee Ming
If this is what you truly wish.
(beat…)
Beyond this device lies the City of the Dead, the land of Yim Lau Wong. Hana is there. I will guide you. We must stay together and find her quickly.
Wee Ming gestures and three Talismans appear in her hand.
Wee Ming
Take these talismans. Never part with them.
She hands them out. One to each.
Wee Ming
Without them, your souls may not return to your mortal bodies.
Deke considers his talisman dubiously.
Deke
Lemme get this straight. Yer sayin’ me life is ridin’ on this dime store trinket?
Wee Ming
Yes.
(considers)
But one of you must stay. You must not leave your bodies undefended.
Deke
I’ll take that job.
Glas
Good idea, Deke. You did great the last time we counted on you.
A cold rage rises in Deke’s face.
Wee Ming chimes in…
9)
Her body slumps, lifeless. Glas rushes over to catch her falling body and takes it in his arms, letting her gently to the floor.
Glas stands again, and makes eye contact with Wee Ming.
Deke looks at Rain’s lifeless body, then at Wee Ming, then at Glas.
Deke
(to himself)
This is gonna hurt. I just know it.
He takes the talisman in his teeth, then roughly snaps it in half.
The red energy courses over his body, and he twitches as though electrocuted, then falls lifeless to the floor.
Wee Ming looks at Glas.
Wee Ming
Their fate now lies in your hands.
She steps toward the mirror’s surface, joining her own reflection. As she does, ghostly streaks of the red energy that consumed Rain and Deke begin to shoot from the bodies toward them, in thin streams, then more strongly, until the whole thing flares into a brilliant red flash just as she crosses through its surface. She is gone, and so are they.
Glas looks at the mirror for a moment, back to its earlier state.
He makes his way over to Deke’s body and straightens it out, taking his talisman half from where it had landed on the floor, and placing it on Deke’s chest.
He then makes his way over to Rain and, a little more tenderly, arrays her body and places her own talisman half on her chest.
Glas
I hate this shit.
11)
Wee Ming looks at the floor, then back at Yim Lau Wong.
Wee Ming
Why are you doing this?
Yim Lau Wong laughs.
Yim Lau Wong
I could tell you the answer, Wee Ming.
(smiles)
But what fun would that be?
wee Ming
Do not underestimate these mortals father. Their free will affords them great power.
Yim Lau Wong smiles.
Yim Lau Wong
Yes, daughter, it does.
(beat)
I am counting on that.
He steps toward the shadows.
Yim Lau Wong
You must excuse me now. I have work to do.
He glances back her way.
Yim Lau Wong
Your stepfather wants a word with you. Do enjoy your time together, won’t you?
He laughs as he steps back into the shadows and is gone.
A black, oily bubble rises from the floor, then begins to deform before it stretches and bursts and reveals the Demon Lam.
Lam
Hello, stepdaughter.
The Black and White Reapers step from the shadows to flank him.
2)
Glas
If you’re too much of a coward to do it, just say so.
Rain is over by the mirror, examining it, engrossed, and not noticing the fight about to erupt.
Deke’s hands creep toward his guns, then he lets them go again and steps up into Glas’ face.
Deke
(with a quiet, cold smile)
Ya didn’t even have the balls t’ tell Hana ya had th’ hots for her when she was alive.
(beat)
So who’s the real coward, buddy boy?
All it’ll take is a twitch...
Rain reaches out and touches the mirror’s surface. The surface sparks against her finger with a bang and a whiff of ozone and she pulls back fast.
The sound damn near startles Glas and Deke into shooting, but instead, they turn to see what’s happening.
A human form begins to coalesce in the mirror – a dark silhouette far amid the distant swirls.
Everybody steps back.
Rain
Hey guys, I think we got someone’s attention.
A black shadowy form steps out of the mirror, casting a brilliant white shadow behind him.
The shadow then disengages and stands upright as well.
It’s the Black and White Reapers, on their own turf. They look over the three interlopers, heads moving in unison. Appraising them.
4)
Glas
Well, that worked out great, don’t you think?
Rain looks back at him.
Deke
Pretty bloody typical for this place, if you ask me.
Glas sighs and starts to walk away from the other two in exasperation, but then he notices something at his feet - a familiar form – the silhouette of a paper doll.
He kneels down to touch it.
The last piece in place, Glas stands and pulls out the paper Wee Ming doll.
Glas
(suddenly)
I think I know who can help us.
He places the doll into the ruby flame, and it flares to life.
The flame, reflected in the mirror, seems to swell until it fills the glass. Wee Ming steps out of the churning flame.
Deke
Oh, bloody hell, didn’t that dodgy little flake cause enough trouble the first time?
Wee Ming turns to face Glas and nods in greeting.
Wee Ming
I know why you have called me, Royce Glas, but I cannot help you.
Glas
Why doesn’t that surprise me?
Wee Ming
Hana’s fate is subject to a deeper influence than you know. You place yourself in great danger by trying to help her.
(beat)
You should go.
6)
Rain
(to Wee Ming)
There has to be something…
Wee Ming looks back at her, and shakes her head slowly.
She looks away, then back at the others, then at the floor.
Rain sits down, shoulders slumped over. Her head drops.
Wee ming
The journey would endanger your souls. It is not worth this.
Rain continues to look at the floor, despondent.
Rain
(quietly)
It is to me.
Glas and Deke stand nearby, looking alternately at her and at their feet.
A beat.
Deke
(quietly)
Ah, hell.
Rain looks up at him.
Glas glances his way.
Glas
What?
Deke
I’ll go.
(beat)
Hell. We made it out once. What’s to say we can’t do it again.
Glas looks at Deke then to Rain. Finally, he turns to Wee Ming.
Glas
All right, Take us in.
Wee Ming looks at the floor as she considers. Then looks up, acceding to their will.
8)
Wee Ming
Glas should stay.
Glas
No way. I promised Hana I’d take care of Rain.
(glances at Deke)
I’m not gonna let her run around in hell with that psycho.
Deke
(coldly)
Who you callin’ psycho, mate?
Rain steps between them and faces Glas.
rain
Please Glas, I’d feel better knowing you were protecting us.
Glas grits his teeth. He knows there’s no choice.
Glas
Dammit.
Deke glances at Glas.
Deke
Looks like nobody gets what he wants ‘roun’ here, huh mate.
Rain turns to Wee Ming.
Rain
(to Wee Ming)
What do we do now?
Wee Ming
You must break your talisman.
Rain looks at hers in trepidation. She swallows.
She looks at Glas.
She holds it in front of her and snaps it in half.
A wave of red lightning-like energy courses over her body and she convulses, eyes wide in surprise. Then it dissipates, and as it does, one of the broken halves of the talisman disappears with it.
10)

int. city of the dead, JUDgment hall
Wee Ming materializes alone.
She looks around for Rain and Deke, but they’re nowhere to be seen.
Wee Ming
Rain? Deke?
The Chair of Judgment sits before her, not far away, and she sees it now.
Wee Ming
…oh, no.
Her confusion turns to anger when YIM LAU WONG appears from the shadows.
Yim Lau Wong
Hello, my daughter.
Wee Ming wheels to face him.
Wee Ming
What have you done with them?
Yim Lau Wong brushes the question aside with a casual gesture.
Yim Lau Wong
Your friends will have to fend for themselves a bit, I’m afraid.
Wee Ming steps toward him.
Wee Ming
You fear me father? Is that why you have interfered?
Yim Lau Wong
Fear you? You have done exactly as I anticipated, my beloved daughter. You brought them to me.
12)
She looks up into his face.
Fadeout.
Fadeup.

Deke
You guys again? Whadda they got you workin’ both shifts?
The Black Reaper man looks Deke over as Deke leans against the counter.
Black reaper
I notice you are…
White reaper
…unarmed.
Deke reaches instinctively for where his holsters should be. And, of course, they’re not there. He looks back up at them.
Deke
Yeah. Think ya can take care a that for me?
The White Reaper reaches beneath the counter and produces a pair of elaborately folded paper shot pistols. He places them on the counter and Deke eyes them dubiously.
Deke
Origami. Nice to see you fruitcakes got yerselves a hobby. You weave baskets too?
The White Reaper produces a flame between his fingers and ignites the pistols, which flare up and are replaced by a pair of real shot pistols.
Deke reaches for them.
Deke
That’s what I’m talkin’ about.
The Black Reaper slides them away from his approaching hand.

Deke starts to reach for his pockets.
Deke
Trust, huh? I can get me a wad a that at the casino.

Money…
White reaper
…is not the answer.
Deke stops for a second.
Deke
What?! Y’ gotta be jokin’ mate! What else ‘m I gonna give ya? Pocket lint?
He produces the talisman half.
Deke
This piece a junk?
They perk up visibly.
Black reaper
That would suffice…
White reaper
…for now.
Deke
What, the lint?
3)
They continue to look at him impassively. He fingers the talisman.
Deke
I dunno. They told me this is my ticket back outta here.
Black reaper
Ah but think of the glorious havoc…
White reaper
…you could wreak with these by your side.
White reaper
But if you are unsure…
The Black Reaper takes the guns and begins to place them behind the counter.
Black reaper
…of your ability to repay…
This gets Deke’s hackles up.
Deke
Hey now! There ain’t a casino built that don’t pay out under ol’ Deke’s hands.
They watch him, impassively.
Deke
(considering)
…so… what’d it cost to buy this baby back?
The Black Reaper places the guns back on the counter.
Black reaper
A minor…
White reaper
…trifle.
4)
Deke
Listen mate, I ain’t stupid. I ain’t givin’ up nothin’ without a set price attached.

Deke

He places the talisman on the counter, but keeps his hand on it.
deke
…I’ll be able to buy it back whenever I want right?
Black reaper
Of course…
White reaper
If you desire.
He slides the talisman across the counter.
The White Reaper hands the pistols to Deke as the Black Reaper lifts the Talisman from the counter and inserts it into an inventory bubble behind him.

White reaper
You may have the talisman…
But instead of the talisman, he produces a deck of cards from a bubble beside it.
Black reaper
…But wouldn’t you rather have this lucky deck instead?
Deke’s hands move toward his pistols. He doesn’t like cheats that aren’t him.

int. brothel vip room - night
Upon entering the VIP whore room, Deke sees an especially beautiful whore. Her face is obscured by her hanging hair, and she’s facing away.
He approaches from behind.
Deke
Don’t be shy, doll. I’ll go easy…
He gets his arms around her, still from behind.
Deke
(into her ear)
...fer starters.
She raises her head. It’s Hana!
Deke pushes away in shock.
Deke
Bloody hell! Hana?
His initial shock now gives way to relief and elation – he’s found her!
Deke
No worries, love! We’re gonna get you outta here!
He starts to pull her up.
She isn’t moving.
Deke
Come on, doll. I’m here ta save ya!
Suddenly, her head snaps to face him. She’s on her feet in an instant and stalking toward him.
Hana
(almost hissing at him)
Save me? You put me here.
3)
Hana digs her fingers into his cheeks and turns his head back roughly to face her.
Hana
Look at me! Look at what you’ve done, you bastard! I’m a stinking whore rotting in Hell and you did this to me!
Deke gets his own hands onto her neck, trying to get her off him. She’s clawing at his face, drawing blood.
Deke
Stop!
She doesn’t. She’s an animal, savagely attacking him.
Hana
(choking it out)
You did this to me!
Deke keeps the pressure on, just trying to get her off, hands on her throat, shaking her like a dog killing an animal.
Hana
(barely audible)
…you…did…this…
Another shake. Deke’s eyes have gone dead. No soul left – just a killer doing what he does.
She’s gone silent. Still. Lifeless. He holds her.
A familiar laugh creeps into the room.
Realization slowly dawns on Deke, and he lets the body to the floor, kneeling down beside it.
Unbeknownst to Deke, a few thin tendrils extend from Hana’s body to a looming figure appearing from the shadows behind him. They dissipate suddenly as the figure comes into view – It’s Madam Chen.
Chen
(like a lover)
Does it feel better now, Deke? All the guilt, all the pain, is it gone?
2)
Deke steps back, taken aback.
Deke
I…
Hana
(taking another aggressive step with each beat)
You caused this, Deke. You can’t fix it. You could never fix anything. You’re useless.
Deke grabs her arm and starts trying to pull her toward the door. She’s surprisingly strong, and not going.
Deke
(starting to get angry)
We gotta go.
Hana starts circling him, almost stalking him.
Hana
Go where? Hmmm? You’re not going anywhere.
She’s behind him now, speaking into his ear.
Hana
You gave away your soul.
(beat)
Now we’re both damned.
She places a hand against his face.
Hana
I trusted you once.
She pushes off his face.
Hana
Never again.
Deke turns away.
Deke
(trying to control himself)
Stop!
4)
Deke doesn’t look up at her. He knows who this is. He remains focused on Hana and what he’s done. Again.
Deke
(quietly)
No.
(breaking down)
I’m so sorry, Hana...
Madam Chen reaches around him. Bladed talon against his throat. She could kill him in an instant now, and he doesn’t care.
She presses the blade into his exposed throat. No response from him.
Chen
I can end your suffering.
A beat.
Abruptly, she retracts her talon.
Deke looks wildly up at her, his face desperate.
Chen
Go to the ferryman. Across the river waits the Judgment Hall, and your absolution.
Madam Chen vanishes.
Deke remains beside Hana’s body another moment. A single, choked sob racks his body and he clambers to his feet and scrambles to the door and out.

Deke takes it and holds it in his hand. He looks at it, his own reflection just barely visible in its polished surface.
Deke realizes he has no clue what to do next.
Deke
(slightly embarrassed)
Okay… how’s it work?
White reaper
You simply have to…
Black reaper

Deke

Black reaper

Deke isn’t sure what to make of this.
Deke

The White Reaper places the Paper Mallet on the counter.
White reaper

Deke considers the mallet. He gets what’s going on.
Deke
(indicates the mallet)
You’ll gimme that…
(holds up his own talisman)

White reaper
You do understand that…
He continues to consider the talisman.
Deke
I’d be givin’ up me soul, right? For good?

int. chair boss room - night
Glas steps into the Chair Boss room. Deke sits, bound and entranced, in one seat of the Judgment Chair.
Rain sits in another seat, and what looks like Hana sits in a third.
Rain looks up urgently as he enters.
Rain
Glas! Hurry up! Before he gets here!
Glas
Who?
Rain
Yim Lau Wong! He’s coming! Quick! This is our way out!
Glas looks behind him, then makes his way quickly toward the chair.
He hesitates before the empty seat.
Glas
How’d you –
Rain
Hurry! Please!
He sits in the chair, and it immediately writhes to life and binds him stiffly.
Rain stands up. Her body shimmers and comes clear. It’s Mist.
The Hana figure looks up through crazed, demonic eyes as Yim Lau Wong steps forward. He dismisses her with a wave of his hand and she disappears in a puff of acrid smoke.
Glas struggles, furious.
Mist
Well. That was easy.
She bends down close to Glas’ face, and cups it in her hand
2)
Mist
You just haven’t got any luck with women, have you?
(beat)
You’d think you’d be able to tell me and Rain apart by now.
She releases his face and turns away.
Yim Lau Wong glances at her and gestures toward the door.
Her face falls a bit, like a disappointed little girl, but she complies, and steps outside.
Glas
Had to get her to do your dirty work for you, huh Jin? Why don’t you just let me go and we’ll settle this man to man, you coward!
Yim Lau Wong laughs.
Yim Lau Wong
Man to god, you mean.
(beat)
Do you really think yourself such a threat?
Glas looks away.
Yim Lau Wong
Do you honestly believe anything happens here, in my domain - in Hell - that I don’t allow to happen?
(beat)
That I don’t cause?
He steps toward Glas.
Yim Lau Wong
I brought you here.
Glas looks up angrily.
Glas
We came here to bring back Hana.
3)
Yim Lau Wong
As I knew you would.
(beat)
Who do you think orchestrated her death?
He comes close now. Right in Glas’ face.
Yim Lau Wong
Remember your dream? …of Hana… Tormented and pleading for your help… The mark on your arm… You never had a choice, Royce Glas!
He gestures at Deke. Deke shifts in his chair as though suddenly in the throes of a bad dream.
Yim Lau Wong
And this one… He was the easiest of all. His greed, his hatred… his guilt. He belongs here. I merely rescheduled his arrival.
He turns back to Glas and Deke’s agitation subsides.
Yim Lau Wong
(over his shoulder)
And you played your part perfectly.
He turns away.
He flicks his hand absently at the chair, and Glas suddenly convulses into a trance, in the throes of the same life-judgment dream that now holds Deke.

Rain steps tentatively onto the dock. Two other lost souls wait there too, peering out over the water.
One of them turns around. It’s Mist.
Rain
Mist!
At the sound of the voice, the other turns. Hana!
Rain melts and runs to Hana.
Rain
Hana!
She takes her into a deep hug, eyes closed.
Rain
(still holding her)
Hana I…
(chokes)
…I didn’t think I’d see you again.
From the other side, we see Hana’s face. Impassive. No emotion.
Rain turns to Mist.
Rain
How…
Mist
I knew you’d come for her.
Mist looks down again.
Mist
And I wanted to redeem myself.
Rain turns her attention back to Hana, still holding her.
Rain
God… Hana.
She pushes back to take a look at Hana.
3)
Rain stops. Mist is right.
Rain
Okay… What’s your plan?
Mist indicates Rain’s ring.
Mist
Our father’s pearl! I know how to use its power to open a portal at the Judgment Hall. Let me have the ring.
Rain hesitates.
Mist
(urgently)
We have to move quickly, Rain. They know we’re here!
(beat)
Trust me!
Rain considers, then looks at Hana. Decisively, she begins to remove it.
Wee Ming (OS)
Rain, no!
Wee Ming is running toward them, at the top of the docks.
Rain hesitates.
Wee Ming
(yells)
Rain! It’s a trick!
Wee Ming comes closer.
Rain pulls back, uncertain, and turns to face Wee Ming.
Behind her, Hana suddenly animates into full demon form and hauls back for an attack on Rain.
Wee Ming, seeing this, blasts the demon with her blood powers.
Rain wheels to see what she thinks is Hana, tumbling backward.
2)
rain
Hana, why won’t you talk to me.
Hana looks dazed.
Mist
It’s this place.
Mist steps closer to Rain. Rain’s ring starts glowing subtly as Mist comes close.
Mist
We have to get her out of here.
Rain turns to face her, holding Hana protectively.
Rain
Why should I trust you?
Mist looks away.
Mist
I don’t expect you to.
She looks out over the water.
Mist
You don’t have to forgive me, but I want to make up for what I did.
Rain
I’ve heard that before.
Mist steps toward her urgently now.
Mist
Look, we can settle our differences later. Yim Lau Wong knows I’ve taken Hana and he’s coming!
Rain looks up at Mist, still suspicious, but listening.
Rain
We have a way out.
Mist
Hana doesn’t. She doesn’t have a talisman.
4)
Rain
Wee Ming! What are you doing?
Wee Ming fires again, blasting Hana further back, and knocking Mist hard against the ground, seemingly unconscious.
Rain dives down to Hana’s side. She’s wounded and bleeding, to Rain’s perspective. She looks up at Wee Ming in a blind rage.
Rain
Stop!
Wee Ming lines up for another shot, and Rain blasts her with a full blast from the ring.
Wee Ming is blown backward, mortally hurt. She tumbles to the ground, seemingly lifeless.
Rain turns back to Hana, lying wounded in her arms. A savage, demonic face stares back up at her.
It takes a vicious slash at her.
Rain stumbles back, dropping the demon and barely avoiding its attack.
Several more demon Hanas burst out of the water to join the first, and launch the attack.

Rain takes Wee Ming into her arms.
Wee Ming
(going...)
Find Hana… before he does. Her eyes... he wants her eyes...
Rain
Her eyes?
Wee Ming fades a bit more, snapping Rain back to attention.
Rain
Hang on! I’m going to get you help!
Rain tries to move Wee Ming, and Wee Ming gasps in pain.
Wee Ming
(going...)
NO… leave me… you have no time... You must cross the river.
Rain
But you’re hurt!
Wee Ming
Go! You must reach the Judgment Hall before…
She fades. And is gone.
Rain
Wee Ming.
Rain holds her tighter.
She looks up, toward the dock end, choking back tears of rage.
2)
Mist climbs unsteadily to her feet, at the end of the dock. Energy coursing around her body and concentrating at her hands. She raises them slowly toward them.
A massive blast of energy erupts from Mist’s hands toward them.
Rain raises her ring in a desperate maneuver, still holding Wee Ming in her other arm, and its protective shell absorbs the blast.
The supercharged energy shell now sucks back into Rain’s ring, and she levels it at Mist.
Rain
See ya sis.
She unleashes a massive energy blast, but just before it hits, Mist dematerializes in a flash, and is gone.
Rain lets Wee Ming down gently and stands.
She approaches the end of the dock. No movement. No sign of her.
Rain turns her attention now to the bells hanging over the dock.
She reaches toward one of the bells, but before she touches it, from across the river, the Ferryman appears from the mist. He drifts up against the dock.
Rain steps up to him urgently.
Rain
Please, can you help me? I need to get across the river.
Ferrymen
All must pay the fee. All must pay for their sins.
Rain takes a step back, concerned. She hasn’t got any money.
3)
Rain
What is my fee then?
The Ferryman studies her.
Ferryman
Impossible...
He searches for something that’s not there. He finally relents.
He looks at her seriously.

Rain
Please. I haven’t got much time.
This is starting to annoy him.
Book Caller

He finally looks up at her, and sees her face.
Book Caller
(recognizing her)
You!
Rain looks around, surprised. He knows her?
He smiles maliciously.
Book Caller
We have been expecting you.
The Book Caller charges up a lightning attack, and Rain sees this. She takes a step back, just as he unleashes the blast. The lightning arcs off the Ring’s area shield and back into him.
He convulses as his own lightning courses through him, then falls heavily to the podium floor and disintegrates.
Rain steps back, taken aback, then considers the gate. She has no way to open it now.

Still without so much as a glance in her direction, Yim Lau Wong flicks an idle hand her way and releases a tremendous blast of energy into her.
It punches straight through her, and she stumbles once, twice, eyes wide in surprise, mouth open. Her body begins to slump. As if on cue, the Chair turns to catch her as she falls unconscious. It then proceeds to bind her to the seat.

Rain takes another step back. She looks past Yim Lau Wong to Deke and Glas, sitting, bound and entranced, in the chair.
Rain
What have you done to them?
Yim Lau Wong glances back at them.
Yim Lau Wong
I have done nothing. They have chosen their path. As will you.

It is not my place to set or change your fates. That has always been, and forever will be, your greatest power - the power to choose your own destiny.
Yim Lau Wong smiles.
Yim Lau Wong
Sit, and I will bring Hana here.

Or, use your talisman now and leave. But leave alone. The choice is yours.
Rain examines the chair. The strange appendages and carvings. The face.

Yim Lau Wong

Rain considers the chair again. The empty seat. Her catatonic friends. Yim Lau Wong.
Rain
If I sit, will you let them go?
Yim Lau Wong laughs.
Yim Lau Wong
Dear girl, you still don’t understand. I did not MAKE them sit. It was THEIR choice. They chose to sit!
(a glance)
I could not release them even if I wanted to!
Rain looks intently at the Chair and all its occupants.
Yim Lau Wong
Do take your time in making your decision Rain. After all, between you and I, we have eternity.
Rain steps toward the seat, cautiously.
She turns and faces Yim Lau Wong, locking eyes with him.
And sits, still watching him the whole way down.
The chair writhes to life, binding her tightly.
But she doesn’t slip into the familiar trance.
A moment passes. And another.

Hana and Rain disengage and climb to their feet.
Hana looks over at Glas and Deke, bound to the chair.

Yim Lau Wong
Tell me Rain. What did the chair reveal to you?
Rain is surprised by the question. She looks like a kid caught shoplifting.
Wee Ming steps up suddenly.
Wee Ming
(to Rain)
No, Rain! Don’t!
Yim Lau Wong flicks his wrist at her without looking her way.
Yim Lau Wong
Enough! Leave us.
She collapses into a paper doll. He turns his attention fully back to Rain, all business.
Yim Lau Wong
Now, then. Rain.
Rain takes a step back.

She faces Hana, suddenly serious.
Wee Ming
Stay away from the Judgment Hall, Hana. He is there waiting for you. My father has plans for you - and your Eyes…
Hana turns away, agitated.
Hana
My eyes… at that… hospital… or whatever it was, they did… something – they said they removed them.
Wee Ming sits down on a nearby stone.
Wee Ming
My father ordered it.
She looks up at Hana.
Wee Ming
They removed your eyes and empowered them. That’s why everything looked different afterward. You saw the truth.
Hana peers out over the water, musing.
Hana
I don’t get it. Why me? Why give me this kind of power? He can do anything he wants already.
Wee Ming shakes her head briefly.
Wee Ming
I don’t think he can.

Hana runs through the door, followed by Wee Ming.
Rain sees this out of the corner of her eye, and glances that way, surprised.
Rain
Hana!
It’s just enough of a distraction, and the Chair seizes the opportunity. With a sudden, savage thrust, it impales Rain through the chest with the four spikes on the Chair’s underside.
Her head snaps forward, then drops back, the look of surprise still on her face even as she dies.
Hana
NO!!!
Yim Lau Wong appears as he turns to face Hana.
Yim Lau Wong
(casually)
Ah. Good. You’re all here.
He gestures absently with his hand toward the chair, and the chair retracts its blade, dumping Rain unceremoniously to the floor. It skitters back to its original position and settles down.
Hana runs to Rain and kneels beside her. She takes her in her arms. Rain’s head lolls lifelessly.
6)
Yim Lau Wong straightens and turns to face her.
Yim Lau Wong
Dear dear daughter. You think so little of me!

Their suffering is incidental to a much greater purpose.
At this point, Hana focuses intensely on Rain. She holds Rain’s hand and closes her eyes.
Yim Lau Wong observes this.
Yim Lau Wong
Good, Hana. Now. A little fuel for the fire.
He opens his palm toward her and a tremendous burst of energy fires from its center into her body.

He steps closer.
Yim Lau Wong
You see, Hana, it all comes down to free will.

He now points to Hana.
Yim Lau Wong
But you, Hana… You have the power to change fate. …Perhaps even mine.
Hana

Yim Lau Wong smiles.
Yim Lau Wong
Free will, of course.
10)
Yim Lau Wong
Perhaps it is unwise to trust me.
He takes a step toward them.
Yim Lau Wong
But then again, you, my friends, are in hell.
He takes a step closer to the pair and peers into their faces.
Yim Lau Wong
So what choice do you really have?
Rain starts to glance his way, then thinks better of meeting his gaze, and continues to focus on Hana, uncertain what to do.
Yim Lau Wong sees this and laughs.
Yim Lau Wong
Such is the nature of your free will. You have the power to direct your own fate; to choose your destiny.

It is a power denied even to the gods. As gods, we have no fate, and no power to choose.

He smiles and holds out his hands.
Yim Lau Wong
Thanks to you, now I do.
He turns to Hana now.
Yim Lau Wong
Your friend has played her part. Now, Hana, your part begins. You will use your Eyes to transform my fate.
Hana
Leave me out of your sick little scheme.
Yim Lau Wong makes his way to Glas’ body, bound to the chair.
Yim Lau Wong
Oh, Hana, you wound me!
He takes Glas face in his hand.
Yim Lau Wong
I thought my scheme was rather ingenious.
He turns to face her.
Yim Lau Wong
After all, it worked so well.
He steps toward her.
Yim Lau Wong
The threat to Rain’s life, which I knew you would never allow to go unanswered… Your friend’s betrayal… Your death… The dreams which awakened Rain’s desire to save you… all of it leading to this moment.
(beat)
And now, even against your wishes, you will play your part.
Hana
Like hell.
5)
Yim Lau Wong
Very good.
He opens his palm to her and a massive blast of energy slams into her chest. She closes her eyes with the force of the impact, but when she opens them again, they’re glowing brilliantly.
Yim Lau Wong
You now have the power. Free them.
She turns to face the chair, and as her eyes flash, the chair convulses as though suddenly introduced to a great pain, and it dumps Glas and Deke to the floor.
Yim Lau Wong’s body stiffens and he closes his eyes. A strange glow begins to emanate from around him. He opens his eyes again to ponder Hana with a look of deep satisfaction.
Yim Lau Wong
It is done.
The glow in Hana’s eyes begins to subside, and she closes them and stumbles, dizzy from exertion.
Rain runs to Glas’ and Deke’s bodies on the floor and crouches beside them. They begin to move, almost imperceptibly at first; alive but barely conscious.
Yim Lau Wong indicates the talismans on the floor.
Yim Lau Wong
(to Rain)
You may go.
Rain stands up straight at this.
Rain
I’m not going anywhere without Hana.
Yim Lau Wong smiles.
Yim Lau Wong
Hana, I’m afraid, must remain.
7)
Rain retrieves the talismans from the floor.
Glas
(weakly)
Hana! What are we…
Hana puts a hand on his shoulder.
Hana
You’re going home.
She takes him and Deke together into an embrace, then releases them.
Hana
(to Rain)
Go.
Rain presses the talismans into Glas’ and Deke’s hands respectively.
As she does, Yim Lau Wong gestures, and the talismans flare brilliantly.
Rain
Hana, I –
She’s gone.
Hana turns to face Yim Lau Wong, alone with him now.
Yim Lau Wong
I thought they’d never leave.
He looks to the chair.
Yim Lau Wong
Now for the finale.
He sits.
A tremendous explosion of energy fills the room as Yim Lau Wong’s body flares brilliantly.
Hana shields her face with her arms.
The chair blasts apart, leaving Yim Lau Wong standing there, at the center of the chamber, glowing, arms outstretched.
4)
Yim Lau Wong smiles at the unintended reference.
Yim Lau Wong
How else will your friends go free?
Hana doesn’t answer; just looks on in pure hatred.
Yim Lau Wong takes a step toward her.
Yim Lau Wong
I will grant you the power to alter their fates.
(beat)
And when you do, you will alter mine…
(beat)
…as Rain has foreseen.
Hana glances at Rain, but Rain looks at the floor.
Yim Lau Wong produces the three talismans, and continues to approach Hana.
Yim Lau Wong
You will need these, I believe.
Hana refuses to take them.
Yim Lau Wong tosses them to the floor, one by one. Each lands with the cold thud of an object much heavier than its size would suggest.
Yim Lau Wong
My patience is wearing thin.
Rain looks unhappily at the three talismans on the floor; her own among them.
Hana sees this.
She looks at the floor.
Finally, she nods, almost imperceptibly.
6)
He makes his way over to the chair, where Mist remains bound, and places a hand on it. The chair writhes and hisses somewhat in protest, but accepts his touch.
Rain
Then I’m staying too.
Hana approaches Rain and takes her hands.
Hana
Rain, please.
Rain pulls her hands away.
Rain
No! I’m not leaving you!
Glas begins to stir awake and groans.
Rain sees this.
Hana takes her shoulders.
hana
Rain, it has to be this way.
Rain
Hana…
Rain looks down. She’s trying not to cry in front of her.
Hana
Rain, I know you saw it.
Rain nods, almost imperceptibly.
Hana
This is our fate.
Rain nods again and takes Hana into a deep embrace.
They hold each other.
After a long moment, they disengage.
Hana
Now get them out of here.
Hana turns away from Rain and makes her way over to Glas and Deke.
8)
Mist lies slumped against one of the walls, unmoving.
Hana lowers her arms and looks back at Yim Lau Wong.
PUSH IN ON: his face, as he looks straight out at us, eyes flashing.
Yim Lau Wong
Ahhh. Free will. And a god’s power to use it…
(smiles)
Where to begin?
His eyes flare brilliantly.
flash to white.

1)
int. judgment hall – night
Rain searches Hana’s face for answers, but can’t find anything there to hang onto. Her eyes flick desperately toward Yim Lau Wong.
Then, finally:
Rain
(quietly, to Hana)
I’m sorry, Hana.
Hana
No, you can’t trust him, Rain!
Rain turns to face Jin.
rain
If I do what you want, what happens?
Yim Lau Wong smiles.
Yim Lau Wong
You, I think, know that better than I.
Rain nods and looks at the floor.
Hana
Rain, don’t do this.
Rain looks back at Hana with an expression of defeat and utter regret. Then at Yim Lau Wong.
Yim Lau Wong
(coaxing)
The chair attacked you. Why?
Rain
I thought that was your doing.
Yim Lau Wong laughs.
Yim Lau Wong
You overestimate my influence. The chair of judgment obeys laws I cannot change.
3)
He glances at Mist, in the chair.
Yim Lau Wong
That was Mist’s plan all along – to unite and reawaken your father; the shaper of reality…
He grows excited at the thought.
Yim Lau Wong
…but if the energy of that union were to be channeled through the Chair of Judgment, it could be directed into me… …that power could become mine…
(beat)
Such a thing surpasses even my own ambitions.
Rain appears surprised by the course his thought has taken and steps back.
Rain
You’re not getting me in that chair, Jin.
He glances at her as though suddenly reminded of her presence at all.
Yim Lau Wong
Of course. I would never dream of impinging on your precious free will.
(beat)
You may do as I instruct…
He sweeps a hand past Glas and Deke in the chair, and settles on Hana, still gasping on the floor, but holding herself upright.
Yim Lau Wong
…or watch your friends meet their fates.
He flicks a finger, and another blast hits her, lighter than the first, but enough to remind them all of the power he wields. She groans and sinks lower, but struggles to keep her head up and facing him with an expression of pure hatred.
5)
Hana
Rain, this is a mistake.
Rain steps toward Hana now.
Rain
There’s no other way, Hana.
She reaches Hana and helps her to her feet.
SLOW MOTION CLOSE ON: Rain’s lips, as she whispers something into Hana’s ear.
Hana struggles shakily to her feet and looks into Rain’s eyes. Rain continues to hold Hana’s hands even once she’s on her feet.
Hana
Rain, I –
Rain
You belong with the living.
(beat)
I never did.
Rain looks down, then back into Hana’s eyes.
Rain
Please, Hana. Do this for me.
Hana looks at the floor for a long moment. Then steps in to take Rain into a deep embrace.
Yim Lau Wong, meanwhile, is losing patience with this whole scene.
He steps toward them.
Yim Lau Wong
Even the patience of a god has limits.
Hana and Rain disengage from each other and face him.
Rain
(quietly)
We’ll do as you ask.
Yim Lau Wong
Very good.
7)
She takes Glas’ hand and places the talisman in it, tenderly, looking into his face as she does.
Glas
What about you?
Instead of answering, she turns to Deke, and places his talisman in his hand. His fingers curl weakly around it and he glances into her face, but can’t hold her gaze and winds up looking away at the floor.
The talismans flare brilliantly.

Rain now stands alone, her hand still outstretched from where it held Hana’s only a moment ago. She lets it fall slowly to her side.
Yim Lau Wong, behind her, now takes a step forward.
Yim Lau Wong
It is time.
Rain turns to face him, and he and she walk toward the chair, where Mist still sits entranced, together.
In unison, they sit.
The chair snaps to sudden life and binds them fiercely.
Yim Lau Wong’s head snaps up in surprise. Rain’s looks strangely serene.
Rain
(low & cold)
I lied, Jin. I saw your fate. But I chose this instead. With us trapped here for all eternity, Hana can finally be free.
Energy crackles over the surface of the chair now, coursing over his body, and over Rain’s and Mist’s.
Yim Lau Wong snarls and frowns and tries to turn his head to face her, but the bonds hold him too tightly.
2)
He considers her closely now.
Yim Lau Wong
What did you see?
Rain
I – a lot of things. I didn’t really understand them.
Yim Lau Wong
It is not necessary that you understand. Just tell me what you saw.
Rain
I saw – Mist …and me …in the chair.
Hana steps in front of Rain and faces her.
Hana
Rain -
Yim Lau Wong waves his hand in irritation, and Hana doubles over as though punched in the stomach with a telephone pole. Hana sinks slowly to the ground, gasping.
Rain moves as if to run to Hana’s side, but then thinks better of it and turns to face Jin once again.
Yim Lau Wong
What else?
Rain
You… you were with us.
Yim Lau Wong considers this.
Yim Lau Wong
Intriguing.
He considers for another moment.
Yim Lau Wong
…if you and Mist were to unite… Of course! How could I not have seen it?
4)
Yim Lau Wong
The choice is yours.
He produces two talismans and tosses them onto the floor before Rain. Each of them lands with the cold thud of an object far heavier than its size would suggest.
Rain glances at them, but makes no move to take them. Her attention returns to Yim Lau Wong.
Then, after a moment:
Rain
If I do as you say, everyone goes home?
Yim Lau Wong
I will grant Hana the power to change their fates. And they may return to the living world.
Rain takes another step forward, pressing her position.
Rain
And once they’re free, Hana goes home too?
Hana looks up at Rain pleadingly.
Hana
(quietly)
Rain, please. Don’t make this deal.
Rain stands her ground, facing Yim Lau Wong. He considers.
Yim Lau Wong
I admit I had thought to retain her …services… a while longer. But it seems that I will not need to use her gift after all.
(beat)
She may go too.
He produces a third talisman and tosses it onto the floor beside the other two.
6)
He opens his palm to her and a massive blast of energy slams into Hana’s chest. She closes her eyes with the force of the impact, but when she opens them again, they’re glowing brilliantly.
Yim Lau Wong
You will find that you now have the power to use your eyes.
She turns to face the chair, and as her eyes flash, the chair convulses as though suddenly introduced to a great pain, and it dumps Glas and Deke to the floor.
The glow in Hana’s eyes begins to subside, and she closes them and stumbles, dizzy from exertion.
Glas and Deke begin to move, almost imperceptibly at first; alive but barely conscious.
Yim Lau Wong indicates the talismans on the floor.
Yim Lau Wong
(to Hana)
You may go.
Rain gathers the three talismans from the floor silently.
She steps toward Hana and stops in front of her.
She holds out Hana’s talisman in her hand, but Hana doesn’t move to take it. She peers unmoving into Rain’s face.
Rain reaches for Hana’s hand, and places the talisman in her palm. She folds Hana’s fingers closed over it.
Glas stirs behind her.
Glas
(weakly)
Rain? Hana? What’s going on?
Rain turns from Hana and steps toward them, talismans in hand.
Rain
You’re going home.
8)
Rain’s and Mist’s bodies begin to twitch as the energy passes through them.
The first flashes of real concern cross Yim Lau Wong’s face, and he struggles against his bonds, but even the king of hell is powerless to free himself from the chair.
The energy grows still stronger, and twitches become convulsions, racking Rain’s and Mist’s bodies savagely, as though they’re being electrocuted.
Yim Lau Wong struggles and tries to release a bolt of energy from a tightly bound hand, but it blasts harmlessly away from the chair.
His own body stiffens now under the force of the energy surging through him.
A massive blast erupts from the chair and a tremendous shockwave rips through the room.

Rain… Don’t tell him anything.
Rain returns her focus to Hana, and each holds the other’s gaze, drawing strength from each other to resist.
Yim Lau Wong looks them over, displeased.
Yim Lau Wong
Ah, dear child, why be so hasty? I ask so small a thing.
Hana’s hand tightens over Rain’s, and she doesn’t answer him. She and Hana remain intent on each other.
Yim Lau Wong frowns and steps forward, threatening.
Yim Lau Wong
The chair shows all beings their fates. It showed you yours.
(beat)
You will tell me what you saw.
He is close now; a menacing presence. Rain finally speaks, without looking at him.
Rain
(quietly)
I – didn’t see anything. There wasn’t any time. …I sat down and the chair attacked. That was it.
Yim Lau Wong sighs.
Yim Lau Wong
You disappoint me.
(beat)
I thought perhaps this time around, you might see things my way. And tell me the truth.
2)
Hana steps between him and Rain, in an almost instinctive gesture of protection.
Hana

Yim Lau Wong sighs and walks away from them.
Yim Lau Wong

But I fear my patience has worn thin.

If you will deny me my one desire, perhaps it is time I deny you yours.
He flicks a wrist, and a massive bolt of energy slams into Rain, doubling her over and hurling her backward.
Hana rushes to Rain’s side and the two of them wind up on the ground, huddled together, Rain gasping for breath, Hana holding her up.
Jin flicks his wrist again, but this time, Rain holds up her ring hand in a futile gesture of protection.
The burst of energy slams into her again and she stiffens and slumps in Hana’s arms with a choked whimper.
Her ring begins to glow slightly.
Hana faces Yim Lau Wong savagely.
Hana
Leave her alone, you bastard!
Yim Lau Wong
Oh, Hana – this is like therapy for me. Let me get it out of my system.
He fires another blast into Rain.
She barely has the strength to raise her ring hand in time, but she manages to do so.
Most of the blast gets through and hits her like a breaking wave against a rag doll.
But a fair bit’s been absorbed into the ring as well, and it’s glowing brilliantly now.

Rain
Hana, use your eyes!
Rain presses the ring into Hana’s body and directs a massive blast; all the stored energy of Jin’s attacks, into her.
Hana’s body convulses with the shock, eyes closed. Then her eyes shoot open, and they’re glowing fiercely.
